How to Remove a Virus From Your Computer
To remove a virus from a Windows PC, back up your files, update Windows Security, disconnect from the internet, then run a Full scan, a Microsoft Defender Offline scan and a second on-demand scanner. Remove unfamiliar programs and browser extensions, then change your passwords from a clean device. If it keeps returning, Geeks IT Sydney can remove it remotely or onsite.
These steps are for Windows PCs and clear most adware, browser hijackers and basic malware. For Macs and phones, we handle virus removal remotely or onsite.
Before you start: If files are encrypted or renamed (possible ransomware), stop and call us on 02 7247 6817 before doing anything else. If you think your logins were stolen, change your email and banking passwords from a different, clean device right away, then call us. In Australia, you can also report cybercrime via ReportCyber and get identity-theft help from IDCARE.
- Back up your important files. Copy documents, photos and other files you can't replace to an external drive, then disconnect the drive. These files may themselves be infected, so scan them before you restore them to any PC.
- Update Windows Security while you are still online. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then Protection updates, and select Check for updates. This makes sure the scans use current definitions.
- Download a second on-demand scanner. One scanner can miss things. While you are still online, or on a clean PC, download a reputable on-demand tool such as Microsoft Safety Scanner from the vendor's own website and move it to the infected PC on a USB drive.
- Disconnect from the internet. Unplug the network cable or turn off WiFi so the malware can't send data or download more files.
- Run a Full scan in normal mode. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then Scan options, and select Full scan. Quarantine or remove anything it finds.
- Run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. In the same Scan options screen, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. The PC restarts and scans before Windows fully loads.
- Run the second scanner offline. Run the scanner you saved to USB and do a full scan with it, then quarantine or remove anything it finds.
- Uninstall unfamiliar programs. Check Installed apps for anything you don't remember adding and remove it.
- Clean up your browser. Remove unknown extensions, reset the homepage and search engine, and clear notification permissions you don't recognise.
- Change your passwords. Do this from a different, clean device, starting with email and banking. If you need help, see our password and MFA setup service.
If the infection keeps returning, a Windows reset or clean reinstall, done after backing up your files, is the most reliable fix.
Is Windows Security Enough to Protect Your PC?
Windows Security catches most common malware, especially when its definitions are current, but it can't catch everything, because malware can disable it or hide while Windows is running. If it finds nothing but the PC still shows signs of infection, run the Offline scan and a second scanner (steps 6–7 above).
What If Malware Blocks Your Antivirus or Won't Let You Scan?
Rootkits and some persistent malware are built to stop security software from working, because they hide deep in the system or restart themselves. If malware blocks Windows Security or stops scans, start in Safe Mode, then use a bootable rescue tool that scans from outside Windows.
First, try Safe Mode. Restart in Safe Mode (not Safe Mode with Networking). On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Recovery. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Then choose Advanced startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and press 4 for Safe Mode. This loads Windows without most startup programs, so many threats can't run, and the PC stays offline. The Windows Security screens may not work properly in Safe Mode, so run your second scanner from the USB drive here.
Make an ESET SysRescue Live USB on a clean computer, download it from ESET's own website, then boot the infected PC from it.
Repeated attempts can also make things worse, for example by deleting files you still need. If pop-ups return after you've removed extensions and cleared notification permissions (step 9), or scans keep finding the same threat, the infection is likely deeper than a standard scan can clear.
If it won't scan or keeps coming back, Geeks IT Sydney can remove it remotely at $125/hour or onsite anywhere in Sydney at $205/hour (one-hour minimum, no call-out fee). Call 02 7247 6817 or book online.
