How do I set up my NBN connection in Sydney?
To set up NBN, confirm your provider has activated the service, connect your modem to the NBN box (FTTP, HFC, FTTC, Fixed Wireless) or phone wall socket (FTTN/FTTB), power it on, enter PPPoE login details if your provider requires them, then set your Wi-Fi name and password.
NBN setup steps and modem ports by connection type
Your internet provider must activate the NBN service before the modem will connect. Some providers require a username and password (PPPoE) entered in the modem's settings page; others connect automatically.
- Confirm with your internet provider that your NBN service is activated.
- Identify your NBN connection type: FTTP, FTTN/FTTB, FTTC, HFC or Fixed Wireless.
- Cable the modem to the correct port for your connection type, as shown in the table below.
- Power on the modem and wait for a steady internet or DSL light.
- Enter your PPPoE username and password in the modem's settings page if your provider requires them.
- Set your Wi-Fi name and password.
- Connect your devices and test your internet speed.
| Connection type | Where the modem plugs in | Modem port |
|---|---|---|
| FTTP | Ethernet cable from the NBN box (UNI-D port) | WAN port |
| FTTN/FTTB | Phone wall socket | DSL port (needs a VDSL2-capable modem) |
| FTTC | Phone wall socket goes to the NBN connection device, then an Ethernet cable runs from the device to the modem | WAN port |
| HFC | Ethernet cable from the NBN box (UNI-D port) | WAN port |
| Fixed Wireless | Ethernet cable from the NBN box (UNI-D port) | WAN port |
If the connection still drops after setup, read NBN or Wi-Fi still not working after setup.
