What we don't repair, and when to go to Apple instead
We don't fit MacBook screens, keyboards, charging ports, hinges or batteries, and we don't do board-level, logic board or component repairs. We diagnose the fault, tell you plainly, and point you to the right place. Diagnosis is billed at our hourly rate (one-hour minimum). MacBook owners comparing scope can also check our laptop repairs page.
Go to Apple or an authorised service provider for screen, battery or board faults, or if your Mac is still under AppleCare. Our Mac repair vs Apple Store guide compares the two.
Is it worth repairing an older Mac?
Usually yes for software faults, and often no for hardware faults on a Mac that no longer gets macOS updates. Ask four things:
- How old is the model, and does it still get macOS updates?
- Is the fault software (usually worth fixing) or hardware (often not on an older Mac)?
- Has it been repaired before?
- Is the fault costing you more hours than the Mac is worth to you?
If it no longer gets macOS updates and the fault is hardware, replacing it is usually better value than repairing it. See our repair vs replace guide.
If your Mac won't start, stop restarting it repeatedly. On newer Macs the storage is soldered to the board and encrypted, so recovering files usually needs the Mac to be working, or Apple or board-level repair, which we refer on. If it still starts, we can help with backups and transfers. See our data recovery page.
Before we arrive: Mac checklist
- Run a Time Machine backup if the Mac still starts.
- Have your Apple ID and Mac login password ready.
- Note any error messages and when the fault started.
